I work with many small and mid-size businesses and frequently interact with their CEO, owners. I constantly hear that 'times are tough', 'there is some movement but not definitive yet', 'lot of talk, not much action', 'seeing some RFPs coming, but decision making is still slow'. Not surprisingly, almost every business owner is trying ways to grow business that he or she never tried before. Just during last week, I came across these individuals (names and professions are changed) and their not-so-traditional ideas.
Networking: Business consulting firm that wants to grow its practice, started a local chapter of networking group. I was invited to attend a small meeting two months after they started - 90 guests!
Lead Generator: Another consulting firm hired couple of senior citizen to get on the phone and generate leads. Fee terms were per lead basis.
New Country: Big US sales and marketing company opened an office in London, UK to generate business there. They had some clients already, now decided to go full throttle.
Get an Office!: A consultant I know got a temp office at a local office suites just so he could meet with some local businessmen and get leads.
Starbucks: Ha! This is true. A marketing consultant I know, started talking (earlier he used to check his blackberry) to other folks while in line for his morning latte. Result - He claimed that within 1st week he got a meeting with a Sales Director of a company.
Car Door Sticker: Local SEO company (2 guys and a sever) printed some door stickers and put them on their SUVs. They say - it works!
I guess, anything that helps grow the business is golden!
